Student of the Month: Sophie Schmehl

Sophie is a former business owner turned massage therapist- and the sweetest person ever!

Sophie has been chosen as our Student of the Month for January due to her exemplary scholarship as a student! Learn more about her and her motivations below. Congratulations, Sophie!

Name one person who has had an impact on your life and explain why.

Too many to mention. Many times a person has come into my life at exactly the right time to make a positive difference so I can’t single just one out, but definitely thankful to all of them.

How did you become interested in becoming a massage therapist?

I was looking for a new career away from the soul-sucking, high-pressure, deadline-driven business I was in for 25 years. I knew I still wanted to interact with people but in a way that made them feel good and gave me satisfaction. It was either massage or an ice cream truck.

What led you to choose Central Maryland School of Massage as your massage therapy school?

I used to drive by CMSM everyday and was always curious about massage therapy as a career; however, it was almost 2 years between touring and when I enrolled. I thank Abigail Carpenter for her persistence.

Name one thing you cannot live without.

Coffee. Period.

Name one country you would love to visit.

Australia for a minimum of 3 months (via India). Everyone I know who has visited Australia tells me I would love it there and might never leave.

Are you a dog or cat person? Or both or neither?

Dogs. Always. I have three.

State three adjectives that describe you:

Honet. Resilient. Pragmatic.

What is your go-to song when you need to get motivated?

“Shot by Both Sides” by Magazine

Anything by The Clash, David Bowie, ro Johnny Cash always makes my day better.

What are your plans after graduating from massage therapy school?

Work hard in the spa industry to improve my skills and then, ideally, work within a treatment facility for addiction recovery. I’m interested to learn more about massage as a treatment and follow up therapy for people in recovery and after they leave 30 or 60 day programs.
